"Can you just look at it" is a dangerous sentence to say to someone who writes software for a living. A friend of mine said it to me a few years ago, about a month after he'd opened his own clinic. He wasn't asking for a system. He wanted someone to sit with him for twenty minutes and tell him why his afternoons kept falling apart.
Turned out the twenty minutes was the easy part. His clinic was being run on a shared spreadsheet and a WhatsApp group, which is fine right up until two people book the same 2pm slot, a patient asks where their invoice went, and the only record of what actually happened in the room is in his own handwriting, in a notebook, on his desk. None of that is a spreadsheet problem. It's a "this has no memory" problem.
I said I'd build him something small. Small lasted about a weekend. What followed was closer to a year of evenings: he'd call and describe whatever had gone wrong that week, I'd sit down after dinner and fix it, and somewhere in the back-and-forth we were designing a real system without ever calling it that. No deck, no roadmap. Just: this broke, here's why, here's what it should do instead.
And it worked. Genuinely, not "for a demo" worked. His clinic ran on it, every day, for months. For a while that was the entire story: one clinic, one system, built because someone I liked kept complaining to the right person.
Then he moved. Not dramatically: life just pointed him somewhere else, and the clinic wasn't part of it anymore. Which left me holding a year of work that no longer had anyone attached to it. No clinic, no client, no reason to keep going except that I didn't want to.
So I kept going anyway. I ripped out everything that only made sense for his specific four walls and rebuilt the rest for whoever might actually need it: more than one practitioner, proper reporting, billing that didn't quietly break the second a second person touched an invoice. The favour was over. The habit it left behind wasn't.
That's ClinyPal. Still built on the same instinct that started it: solve the thing actually in front of you, not the version that photographs well in a pitch deck. There's a lot left to build and I won't pretend otherwise, but the whole thing traces back to one friend's bad spreadsheet, and a favour that never quite finished.
